PhD defence: Viktor Avlonitis

In order to obtain the PhD degree, Viktor Avlonitis has submitted his thesis entitled: Essays on the Role of Modularity in Management: towards a unified perspective of modular and integral design

Tuesday, December 4, 2018 - 13:00 to 15:00

Through four essays the thesis explores the role of modularity, that is a general systems property with adaptive and evolutionary implications for organizations. With roots in the strategic management of technological innovation, modularity is increasingly adopted across other sub-fields of management studies. Drawing on service design from marketing and operations literature, the thesis provides with new insights regarding the effects of modular design in the context of tourism. Additionally, the thesis deconstructs arguments from information systems literature and draws an emerging agenda for the strategic management of technological innovation in the digital age focusing on the maritime industry. Finally, the thesis reconceptualizes the relationship of modular and integral design, creating a common frame of reference to support the cross-pollination of insights and guide future theorizing.
