Co-organising workshop about diversity

In May, the CBS Diversity and Difference platform organised the 5th Workshop on Leadership, Diversity and Inclusion: Inclusive and diverse organization(s) – towards alternative understandings.

The workshop attracted over 40 delegates with 28 paper presentations and 2 keynote speeches. Session themes included norm criticism, LGBT in the workplace and diversity in (national) contexts. The two keynote speeches were delivered by Professor Dorthe Staunæs, Aarhus University, DK, “Breaking up with leadership for inclusion” and Professor Jo Brewis, Open University, UK, “Menopause and the workplace: for an intersectional approach”.

Fully exploiting the workshop format, the delegates were not merely passive listeners to presentations. Ample time was allowed for group discussion, and the participants fed back via Padlet directly to the presenter. This format enabled a great degree of interaction and was highly appreciated  by the workshop

MSC professor in diversity management

Central in organising the workshop was the newly appointed MSC Professor (MSO) in Diversity Management, Annette Risberg.

She has studied diversity in organizations for the last 15 years, with a focus on practices of diversity management, as exemplified in her recent inaugural lecture titled “Diversity Management - Why, what and is it of value?”

Here Risberg reflected upon what diversity in organizations really is, emphasising the significance of organisational norms, frequently in terms of color, sex, age, and national origin, for identifying those who are categorised as diverse from that norm.

Risberg also pointed to the structural discrimination in organizations against people with certain backgrounds as the reason why diversity management has come into existence – it would not be needed if people were considered for employment and advancement in the organization purely on the basis of their skills and competences. Thus, Risberg argues, more inclusive norms and greater tolerance of difference are crucial elements in fostering diverse organisations.
