Doing business in Portuguese speaking countries

presented by

Dr. Ricardo Ferreira Reis

Associate Dean for International Affairs

Católica Lisbon School of Business & Economics

Abstract

From the top of its imperial pride, Portugal spread an easy going business environment around the world. A nation of extremely pragmatic traders, the Portuguese were able to create the first global commercial empire without having a large population or wealth to spare. It was, if you want to think in 21st century logic, a "low cost" global empire.

A lot of this culture is still found in the way business is conducted in the countries that shared this empire in the past.

From an historical to a business perspective, this talk will aim at identifying common cultural traces available in all these countries and discuss social, political and economic consequences thereof.

We will present the 5 things you should know about Portuguese and how it influences business. Next we select 3 turning points moments in History critical for the Portuguese speaking world and we will discuss current state of affairs, focusing on 3 areas and 3 big problems:

1-The financial crisis in Portugal and the solutions found to survive the crisis. How did Portugal get into the crisis, what was done, how was received and how it changed the country.

2-The oil and gas dependency in Portuguese speaking Africa and in Brazil. Why is this noticeably a problem and what were the consequences of this dependency.

3- Political instability in Portuguese speaking countries: how democracy is being adapted by the Portuguese speaking world.

Participation from the audience is widely encouraged and expected. Talks should last up to 45mins."
