Sustainability Seminar Series: CSR Disclosure

Monday, June 3, 2019 - 11:30 to 13:00

Description

Naomi Soderstrom, Professor of Accounting and Deputy Head of Accounting Department, University of Melbourne, will give a seminar about CSR Disclosure in financial reports.

A growing number of corporations invest a substantial amount in sustainability-related activities and many of them report on their activities using voluntarily produced and unregulated sustainability reports. In addition to providing some background on sustainability and reporting, this session will provide an accounting research perspective on corporate sustainability disclosure, primarily focusing on four questions:

Which firms disclose and what do they disclose? What is the quality of disclosures? Do the disclosures matter? How do individual decision-makers respond to the disclosures? Insights into these questions, as well as related opportunities and challenges, will be discussed via extant literature and my current research projects. The research projects employ a variety of research methods, including archival and experimental approaches, which illustrates the richness of research in this area.
