Sustainability Seminar Series - Bert Scholtens on: "Social and financial performance"

“Social and financial performance: Towards a theory of responsible investing”

Tuesday, April 30, 2013 - 15:00 to 16:30

The CBS Sustainability Platform would like to invite you to join our Sustainability Seminar with Professor in “The Economics of Sustainability” at University of Groningen, Bert Scholtens. The seminar will take place on April 30, 2013 from 15:00-16:30 where Professor Scholtens will present his research on: “Social and financial performance: Towards a theory of responsible investing”

Studies that link corporate social and financial performance usually find a positive association between the two. However, the literature does not establish a significant impact of socially responsible investing on stock market returns. Professor Scholtens tries to reconcile the seemingly contradictory literature on corporate social responsibility in relation to financial performance and that on socially responsible investing in relation to stock market returns. His research will show, that that the empirical findings of Margolis and Walsh (2001, 2003) can be interpreted as showing strong evidence in favor of a positive relation between social responsibility and financial performance. Apart from laying the foundations for a theory of responsible investing, his findings have important policy implications.

Besides his Professorship, Bert is also Director of the Energy and Sustainability Centre at University of Groningen. His research expertise lies within the areas of CSR, Socially Responsible Investing, Financial Institutions, Energy Finance and Environmental Economics.
