PhD project: Managing public-private collaborations in the Danish school

Various forms of public-private collaborative organisations have been emerging in the education sector in recent years, and also in Danish public schools. This development has made managing public-private collaborations an unavoidable imperative for school managers today. Addressing the demands put on managers of public-private innovation collaborations in practice, my PhD project explores the forms of human engagements at stake in such collaborations. While formal structures often bind collaborations together in the school, open innovation collaborations have a fluid organisation. The project is based on a combination of empirical data, primarily interviews, documents and ethnographic observations of public-private collaboration projects and educational activities in Danish schools aimed at innovating education. The study focuses on the practice interactions between the actors involved in the collaborations. It provides a close-up look at concrete acts of engagements actualised in innovation collaboration projects between the actors and at educational classroom activities aimed at innovation. Drawing on recent French pragmatic sociology of engagement, the study investigates which forms of engagements are at stake between the actors involved and further what characterizes the concrete management work done to bind the collaborations together.
