NBI consortium partners develops a novel approach to maturity models
As businesses worldwide struggle to keep pace with the digital revolution that is sweeping through every industry, NBI research consortium might just be about to give these struggling companies a helping hand when it comes finding their way in the digital transformation jungle. The Networked Business Initiative project which consists of researchers from the Centre fort Business Data Analytics, industry partners and associations have just published peer-reviewed research on new way for companies to map and measure digital maturity and capability within their company.
Today the real-world of industry practice is full of digital maturity models. However, maturity models have been criticized for the lack of theoretical grounding, methodological rigor, empirical validations, and ignorance of multiple and non-linear paths to maturity. To address these criticisms, the NBI project team has developed a novel set-theoretical approach to maturity models. Specifically, the new research demonstrates that there are multiple pathways to digital maturity which allows organisations to take informed decisions based on cost-benefit tradeoffs and strategy alignment.
The paper is published at the “Methodological and Philosophical Foundations of Information Systems” track at this year’s International Conference on Information Systems (ICIS 2016) to be held in Dublin, Ireland.
Next Steps
One the academic side, further research is being conducted on the set theoretical approach to maturity models. On the industry side, the newly developed digital maturity models will be made available for companies through the NBI website and partners.
