AI technologies are increasingly penetrating our daily lives, and one of the industries that AI is radically transforming is healthcare. Japan is now facing serious societal challenges, such as the increasing elderly population and an acute workforce shortage, especially in the healthcare industry. The successful application of AI could help Japan to sustain its healthcare system and improve its medical productivity. In order to achieve these goals, however, effective interactions between the public and private sectors are indispensable. The chapter critically examines Japan’s strategy to facilitate such interactions, focusing on its national project to develop so-called ‘AI hospitals’.https://doi.org/10.2307/j.ctv270kv9x
