PhD defence: Jinsun Bae

Multinational enterprises (MNEs) increasingly require suppliers located in developing countries to comply with their corporate codes of conduct as they seek to realize corporate social responsibility (CSR) throughout their globally dispersed production networks. But what happens when such notion of CSR arrives in a country emerging out of international sanctions and where local enterprises have had little or no experience of engaging with MNEs’ corporate codes of conduct?
 
This dissertation examines the question of how CSR has been introduced and contested in Myanmar’s export garment industry during 2011-2015. The data for this research was drawn from 6 months-long field research in Myanmar during 2014-2015 and 50 interviews with brands, garment manufacturers, and various stakeholders such as government officials, labor activists, and international development donors.
