Professor Anthony D'Costa has been invited to talk at the Global MBA Research Seminars series taking place at Doshisha Business School. He will give a talk on January 29 and the topic will be "Will China and India Dominate the World?"

The recent spectacular rates of economic growth in China and India are laudable. Two statist economies, known for mass poverty, seem to march to a different economic tune today. Their businesses have expanded, entrepreneurship is rife, huge export revenues are earned and foreign exchange reserves accumulated, and increasingly they are becoming technologically savvy. These developments suggest that they are indeed transforming themselves prompting commentators to speak optimistically about China and India’s economic catch-up or convergence. This presentation acknowledges the huge strides these two countries with over two billion people have made since their modern founding in the late 1940s. But it also underscores the significant challenges that remain, thus calling into question the optimism surrounding their transition process. Professor D’Costa will critically present Transformation and Development: The Political Economy of Transition in India and China (coedited with Amiya Kumar Bagchi, Oxford University Press, 2012).
