Survey of Academics in Denmark 2017

The study aims to gather the views of university researchers in Denmark on essential aspects of academic life. The survey is being carried out as part of a larger research project “Triple-I-Research: Investments, Incentives, and the Impact of Danish Research,” funded by the Novo Nordisk Foundation. The survey was carried out in October 2017.

The Survey of Academics in Denmark 2017 is now closed (December 2017). We are very grateful to all researchers who took the time to participate and contributed their answers to the survey.

We also thank the many researchers from different scientific fields who generously agreed to share with us their time and their valuable thoughts about many different aspects of academic life in interviews and the colleagues who helped us in piloting the survey.

Finally, we thank the University of Copenhagen, Copenhagen Business School, the Technical University of Denmark, and Roskilde University for their willingness to provide us with contact information for faculty and PhD students. The survey comprises researchers at all eight Danish universities.

Results of the survey

  • The first report is now available: ”University researchers engagement with industry, the public sector and society – Results from a 2017 survey of university researchers in Denmark" .The report has been created together with DEA and is available for download. PDF icon cbs_dea_survey_of_researchers_external_engagement.pdf. Background data for the report is available in the excel file: File appendix_tables.xlsx
  • Based on the conclusions of the survey, Jyllands Posten has published an article about the gender bias in Danish research funding. The article describes how the lack of industry collaboration among female researchers may lead to fewer external grants and thereby less opportunity to fulfill the research potential and career opportunities of the individual researcher. The article is in Danish and titled: Færre kvindelige forskere samarbejder med industrien – det kan svække karrieren (Jyllands Posten 12 December 2017).

Background

The study will help us understand some important challenges and opportunities for academics and their role with external actors. Amongst these are:
•    Experiences and perceptions regarding external research funding
•    Drivers, benefits and trade-offs pertaining to academics’ engagement with partners from business or other organizations
•    Career implications of engagement and entrepreneurship, including a focus on family life

We hope that the results of this research can help inform policy at both the national and European level, as it will paint a rich picture of the ways in which academic science and research have impact on economy and society.

The study is being carried out by a research team in the Copenhagen Business School and is funded by the Novo Nordisk Foundation.

All data collected from the survey will be used for research purposes only. Our results will be published as scholarly research and will form the basis for policy reports. Only aggregate statistics will be published, and no information about individuals will be provided. To provide an additional safeguard, your information will be stored and analyzed in anonymized form, meaning your name and email address will be removed from the database.

Please refer to the Frequently Asked Questions in either English or Danish (links above), if you would like to know more about the treatment of your data, or any other aspect of the survey.

Best regards,

Professor H.C. Kongsted
