PhD Defence: Yotam Sofer
In order to obtain the PhD degree, Yotam Sofer has submitted his thesis entitled:
Three Essays on the Economics of Science
This dissertation explores how institutional structures, digital platforms, and autonomy shape the production and diffusion of scientific knowledge. Through three empirical studies, it examines the effects of upgrading colleges to universities in Sweden, the role of social media in the diffusion of economic research, and how diminished research autonomy influences PhD graduates’ career paths. Using detailed administrative, bibliometric, Altmetric, and social media data, each study applies causal inference methods to uncover new evidence on research productivity, knowledge dissemination, and talent allocation. The findings offer timely insights for policymakers and academic leaders on fostering inclusive, impactful, and sustainable research environments.
