PhD Defence: Cecilie Wagner Harden

Thursday, October 9, 2025 - 14:00 to 16:00

In order to obtain the PhD degree, Cecilie Wagner Harden has submitted her thesis entitled:

Recycling Behavior In Take-Back ProgramsExploring Driving Factors And Nudge-Based Interventions For End-User Engagement - Evidence From Novo Nordisk’s Take-Back Program Returpen(TM)

In a time marked by escalating environmental challenges, increasing waste streams, and unmanageable volumes of discarded materials, take-back systems offer a practical solution to address some of these challenges in the transition into a circular economy. For these programs to succeed, a major challenge lies in whether end-users choose to return their used products, keeping them in the circular system—or letting them go to waste. This PhD investigates recycling behavior in healthcare, with a focus on Novo Nordisk’s take-back program Returpen™ for used injection pens. Across three studies, it explores what drives or hinders end-user participation in take-back programs in a non-monetary setting. The research provides evidence on the intention-behavior gap in take-back programs and practical guidance on how take-back programs can be designed to increase participation and strengthen circular material flows in highly regulated industries.
