Head of CBS' Library for 20 years, Michael Cotta-Schønberg, has been appointed Head of Copenhagen University Library as of 1 September 2005

Room for learning

During his years at CBS Michael Cotta-Schønberg has developed the library into a place of learning: State-of-the-art reading facilities, electronic access and (in a Danish context) extraordinary long opening hours. In his design of the new library premises at Solbjerg Plads it has been important to Cotta-Schønberg that art and furniture should interact creatively with the building and in a positive way challenge the more than 1 million visitors a year.

At KU Michael Cotta-Schønberg will be in charge of reorganising the university library and ensuring that the library services are carried into effect from an overall view as well as making sure that the services are made in agreement with the needs of the university.

Copenhagen University Library is formed by uniting the Danish National Library of Science and Medicine and The Royal Library's university library department. Copenhagen University Library is one of two sections under The Royal Library. The other section is The National Library, and the two will be unified as of 1 January 2006.

Library Director Michael Cotta-Schønberg has a comprehensive publication activity behind him, and he is an active lecturer in Danish and international library context. Lately, he has published the article 'Improvisation as Leadership'. Currently Cotta-Schønberg is chairman of The Conference of Directors of Danish Research Libraries. From 1994-1996 he was president of the European Business Librarians' group.

Michael Cotta-Schønberg has been the director of CBS Library since 1985 and head of department at The Royal Library from 1978 to1985. His educational background is a MA in psychology (University of Copenhagen) and Bachelier en Philosophie from the University of Louvain.
