Workshop: Big Data and the News

Researchers and representatives of major Danish news organizations explore the effects of digital transformations on the news business.

Thursday, April 12, 2018 - 13:00 to 15:00

Digital technology is transforming communication in all forms of media. Nowhere is this more evident than in the news media, where the business models of news organizations have been radically altered, with the presence of free media and online advertising. Furthermore, questions of fake news and filter bubbles have been posed with increasing urgency, raising concerns about whether digital transformation constitutes a threat to the function of news in a democratic society.

In this workshop we begin to address some of these crucial, far-reaching questions. The workshop includes research presentations as well as a panel discussion. The research presentations look at the new dependencies news organizations have in a digital ecosystem, and we explore ways in which linguistic data and machine learning can shed light on questions of clickbait and journalistic quality, as well as providing new ways to gain insight into dynamic news content.

In the panel discussion we will get input from news organizations as well as academia, to search for the most fruitful ways of addressing these questions.
