Transformations Platform: Talk by Evgeny Morozov
This talk will survey the political economy of today's digital capitalism, focusing on how data and artificial intelligence have emerged as important geopolitical battlefields of the global order. The ensuring concentration of power in the hands of Big Tech (most of America or Chinese provenance) has profound consequences for democratic politics as well as the economy at large. Europe repeatedly finds itself caught between China's centralized and state-driven model and America's supposedly decentralized and privatized one. Is there a democratic alternative that could allow Europe to ensure its technological sovereignty without succumbing to the populist temptation?
Evgeny Morozov is at the core of current attempts to make sense of digital transformations and the societal consequences of technology. He is a visiting scholar at Stanford University and a Schwartz fellow at the New America Foundation. the author of two books: The Net Delusion: The Dark Side of Internet Freedom and To Save Everything, Click Here: The Folly of Technological Solutionism, and his writings have appeared in newspapers and magazines around the world, including The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, Financial Times, The Economist, The Guardian, The New Yorker,New Scientist, and The New Republic.
