There is an increasing demand on students to possess sound knowledge of various philosophical perspectives and to demonstrate the ability to apply these to research. Attending to philosophical matters, however, is one of the most vexing tasks. In this seminar, Tomas Pernecky will focus on the ontological and epistemological conundrums students and researchers often face in the domain of qualitative research. Through a critical engagement with the most popular/prevailing paradigms and frameworks, it will be argued that the way these have been construed represent a rigid conceptual organisation of ideas, and as such, are limited in capturing philosophical diversity. In addition to providing a new conceptual skeleton for mapping the main epistemologies, Dr Pernecky will challenge the notion of methodological superiority, and emphasise that there is no ‘better’ way to do qualitative research. Rather, qualitative inquiry is characterised by different research aims, philosophical assumptions, varying levels of usefulness, and range of attitudinal factors.

Purpose:
The purpose of this Ph.D. workshop is to help promising scholars to critically reflect upon their philosophical frameworks and use of qualitative methodologies. The workshop will consist of paper presentations, interactive discussions and feedback between participants in a friendly environment.
Attending the PhD workshop and Registration:
Who should attend? PhD students interested in qualitative research, at any stage of study.
To register interested Ph.D. students should send an abstract to Tomas Pernecky tomas.pernecky@aut.ac.nz and Ana María Munar amm.int@cbs.dk. Deadline 15th of May. Manuscripts can range from advanced empirical or theoretical papers or present initial research design and preliminary findings/theoretical contributions.
The number of participants will be limited to eight on a first come, first served basis.
Participants are invited to present and discuss philosophical and methodological issues of their PhD research. Doctoral students are expected to introduce their research with a brief presentation (max 10 min). The contributions will be discussed with the facilitators and the peers.

Biographies
Tomas Pernecky is Associate Professor in the Faculty of Culture and Society at the Auckland University of Technology, New Zealand. His wide-ranging research interests extend to the fields of tourism and events studies, which he employs as contexts for examining a variety of philosophical, conceptual, theoretical, and methodological issues. His teaching has been officially recognised by receiving the 2014 Vice Chancellor’s Award for Excellence in Teaching, and the subsequent nomination by AUT for the 2015 Tertiary Teaching Excellence Award (TTEA). He has edited three books on a range of events-related topics, and recently published a monograph titled Epistemology and Metaphysics for Qualitative Research.
Ana María Munaris Associate Professor and Director of the Center for Leisure and Culture Services at Copenhagen Business School, Denmark. With research interests in digital technologies, epistemology, tourism, higher education, and gender, her latest publications focus on postdisciplinarity, social media and gender in academia. Over the years, Ana has served on several national and international boards and networks. Nowadays, she holds positions at the Diversity and Inclusion Council at Copenhagen Business School, the Critical Tourism Studies Network, Women Academics in Tourism and several tourism journals. She is engaged in curriculum and education development and coordinates the tourism and hospitality concentration at the Bachelor of Service Management and Business Administration. Ana has delivered numerous conference presentations and keynote addresses in her research areas.
