Business in Society

The BiS Platforms are CBS’ concept for engaging in knowledge production, which is based on context-driven, problem-focused and interdisciplinary research that deals with the complex societal and business problems facing our region.


BiS platforms are cross-disciplinary research, education and outreach initiatives, and they draw upon and mobilize the full range of expertise within CBS in order to address a number of societal challenges. The role of the BiS platforms is to facilitate, initiate and support the development of research, teaching and outreach activities. The platforms are working to strengthen ties with CBS’ existing partners as well as developing new strategic partnerships. 

BiS Platforms have a time horizon of 5 years, i.e. they are CBS funded for 5 years with regular evaluation of performance and success criteria.

The globalization that has gradually intensified in the last decades is threatening the competitiveness of Danish firms. Some of the previous advantages of Danish firms, as a location for production activities, are eroding as new competition from emerging economies appear on the global scene. This has spurred intense debate about the competitiveness of Danish firms in both the business press and among researchers.

The ambition of the CBS Competitiveness Platform is to pool knowledge and combine different perspectives on firm competitiveness. By doing so, we not only enrich the teaching and research further, but we also make a concerted effort to take active part and influence the public debate on firm competitiveness with new intriguing insights. In short, the platform will bring knowledge and ideas to business firms and to society as a whole.


How can a society foster more entrepreneurs? How can universities effectively translate their research, expertise and inventions into new ventures? What are the conditions for corporate entrepreneurship (and new business venturing) and sustained innovation-based corporate growth? What makes social entrepreneurship initiatives successful where private and public initiatives have failied? How can we support student start-up initiatives so they are more likely to succeed?

The central aim of the CBS Entrepreneurship Platform is to stimulate, facilitate and support the development of greater capacity to find research-based solutions to such (and related) challenges. Businesses, entrepreneurship education, and public partners are all part of creating these solutions. 


The oceans and seas are fundamental to trade and globalization and provide a central livelihood for an increasing number of countries and regions, and hence an essential part of our wealth and human welfare. Besides from the shipping and fishing industries there are rapidly developing maritime industries, involving the production of food, energy and minerals and magnifying the external costs of maritime activities. In addition to such seaside activities the maritime context involves a number of important land-based industries and logistics nodes linking land and sea.
CBS Maritime is committed to addressing the big question of how to achieve parallel economic and social progress in the maritime context from a shared value creation perspective. The latter is founded on the premise that companies need a healthy society just as much as society needs healthy companies. CBS Maritime aims to strengthen a maritime focus at CBS and create the foundation for CBS as a stronger partner for the broad maritime industry as well as for other universities and research institutions, in Denmark and abroad.


The following platform initiatives have ceased receiving CBS platform funding. They are still highly active and valuable for CBS, and are presently supported by participating departments, and embedded in these departments´ activities:


Many contemporary matters of public concern - political, economic, social and cultural - are no longer seen as amenable to being solved in terms of a traditional divide between public and private actors and sectors. These pressing issues are represented as too complex to be solved by single agencies, regardless of whether they are public or private.

One of the dominant themes in contemporary policy debates is the need to find novel solutions to these problems that mobilise the capacities of all sectors and institutional actors - public, private, and third, without making a priori assumptions about who or what agents are best placed to secure what purposes. The core aim of the CBS Public-Private Business in Society Platform is to help mobilise, foster and develop society wide solutions to these and related matters of concern


Sustainability is one of contemporary society’s grand challenges arising from the complex interaction between environmental, social and economic development and encompassing a diverse array of issues, e.g. environmental pollution, poverty, climate change, human rights violations, lack of corporate accountability, corruption and financial inequality and other effects of increased globalisation that change the way people live and the planet develops.

The CBS Sustainability Platform’s overall research, education and outreach agenda was to question and challenge how the interplay between society’s environmental, social and economic activities is influenced by business and is influencing business. Continuing the work initiated by the Sustainability BiS Platform (2011-2016), the Department of Business and Politics (DBP), the Department of Management, Politics and Philosophy (MPP), and the Department of Management, Society and Communication (MSC) joint forces in 2016 to fund its successor initiative - CBS Sustainability - as an organizational unit promoting and coordinating sustainability-related work at CBS.
