Inovation and Sustainable Business Practice

For many years, CBS has done extensive research within the field of innovation and sustainability, including the study of sustainable practices and developments in organizations, markets and society at large. A main focus lies on how to achieve the Sustainable Delvelopment Goals (SDGs) through new business models, which transform industries towards a sustainable future.

Issues

Research on this topic includes questions such as: How do we best match difficult climate challenges with relevant problem solvers to create sustainable innovation and useful business ideas? What are the typical challenges in translating an idea of sustainability into business and how can such challenges be addressed (innovation management)? How can local entrepreneurs and social innovation affect the transition to a sustainable economy? How can we design, implement, monitor and control a sustainability programme, including the internal transition of a company and stakeholder dialogue?   How can companies control and guide their own suppliers on requirements for materials etc. to manufacture environmentally safe products? Which role do multinationals play in green transition – do they contribute to the problem with their production methods or can they adopt and further leverage green business models? How do we build integral interlinked networks for energy and other infrastructures by linking transport and energy?

Research Highlights

  • Making Distant Futures Actionable: Innovating for a Zero Carbon Future
  • Dancing the Supply Chain: Toward Transformative Supply Chain Management: Supply chains tend to be operated without much concern for their broader contextual environment. This article reinterprets the supply chain as a social‐ecological system and leaves behind a modernist view of SCM, replacing it with a more contemporary vision of “dancing the supply chain.” (Contact PI: Andreas Wieland)
  • Innovative sustainable urban last-mile: small vehicles and business models (i-SMILE): The project will investigate the rationale of stakeholders in last-mile deliveries in cities to identify the drivers for making sustainable choices and propose innovative business models. Primary stakeholders are consumers, shippers and logistics service providers, as well as municipalities. (Contact PI: Britta Gammelgaard).
  • Environmental sustainability of tourist hotels, Zanzibar: Research shows that sustainable tourism has become an established part of corporate and governmental agendas, but that is impossible without proper management and commitment of involved stakeholders. Zanzibar, an island heavily dependent on tourism, has increasing difficulties in attracting tourists and in maintaining good quality tourism products. The EnSuZa project takes a point of departure in the synergy between sustainable tourism and innovation, and aims to contribute to strengthening the quality and competitiveness of tourism in Zanzibar, by developing novel organizational practices that integrate solid waste management, mosquito control measures and environmental practices in hotels.
