Maritime research at CBS covers a broad spectrum of questions of relevance to the global maritime sector. For example: the dynamics of maritime clusters, the climate challenges to shipping, outsourcing and economic organization in maritime industries, risk management in commodities, the sources of nations’ and companies’ competitive advantages in global shipping, and the challenges and opportunities of commercial shipping in sensitive sea areas (e.g., the Arctic).
Research Areas
With the application of economics and business administration models and theories, in combination with empirical methodologies clearly defined on a case-by-case basis, CBS Maritime is engaged in scientific and practical research.
An important stated aim is to provide the scientific background for solving practical management and policy problems in the maritime area, targeting selected research topics and empirical focus in:
• Maritime transportation (short-sea and international shipping, shipowners and operators)
• Shipping intermediaries (e.g., ship brokers, freight forwarders, third-party ship management)
• Ports, terminals and maritime logistics (including navigational aid)
• Shipbuilding and repairs
• Maritime equipment manufacture and services
• Maritime business services
• Offshore oil, gas and wind
• Offshore minerals extraction
• Fisheries and seafood
• Maritime regulation and standards
• Maritime clusters
• Quality Shipping in maritime policy
• Maritime safety and environmental protection
• Sensitive oceans and sea areas (e.g., Maritime Arctic, Baltic Sea, small island areas)
CBS Maritime is cross-departmental and bridges management disciplines based on standard Business Economics (micro/macro economics, managerial economics, corporate finance, financial accounting, marketing, strategy and organization); Logistics and Supply Chain Management; International Commercial Law, Law and Economics, and Business Law; Industrial Economics; Economic Geography; International Business; Business History; and Sociological perspectives on organizations and their surroundings.
CBS Maritime thus facilitates the development of interdisciplinary projects and provides a unifying research infrastructure.
