Brookings initiative on 21st Century City Governance (21st Century City Governance)

Abstract:

Beginning in 2016, the Brookings Institution plans to launch a new Initiative on 21st Century City Governance. Working closely with a small network of priority cities, the Initiative will capture and chronicle the new wave of city-led problem solving and help to catalyze new innovative forms of city and metropolitan governance. With this information and independent, comparative research, Brookings will seek not only to accelerate the spread of smart governance models across cities and metropolitan areas but also to rethink the division of powers, resources and responsibilities across different levels of government and sectors of society. Our ambitious goals: to create new norms of urban governance that can be adapted and tailored across the world and to alter the relationship between supra-national, national and state governments and the public, private and civic institutions that govern cities and metropolitan areas. .
