Sales Development Director adds academic layer to his skills with Blue MBA

Current Blue MBA participant, Jan Kragh Michelsen, is the Sales Development Director, Global Maritime, at Cobham Satcom and decided to go “back to school”, starting his Executive MBA in Shipping and Logistics at CBS this past Septemer. With years of “learning by doing”, Jan decided it was time to get some more knowledge at an academic level commenting, “I’m adding an academic layer to my skills, and in that sense I feel that I’m getting 1+1 equals 2, but what I’m really getting is 1+1 equals 3.”

The strategic part of the programme is one of the areas that Jan is benefitting from the most and he expects to use directly with his daily job which focuses on executing Cobham Satcom’s overall marine strategy.  “I’ve never been a broker or a shipper, and it’s good to get closer to the operational aspects of the shipping industry while also learning about the various mechanisms in the industry,” he says.

The Blue MBA gives participants a broader view of the shipping industry as a whole, which Jan stresses is very important. The most recent module was held in Hamburg with a focus on ship design, which might not seem very relevant to his daily work but he tells us otherwise saying, “The ship design part is relevant to me because we, at Cobham Satcom, also supply equipment to the shipyards. And It’s always good to update your knowledge in the field. A lot has happened since I finished my training.”
