This paper discusses multiple cases of business model development in four solar companies on two distinct markets undergoing conditional changes. Here we examine how business models for distributed solar energy develop. In this article we provide empirical evidence that confirm and support the ideas of a contingency framework on business model dynamics that have been advanced in previous literature. We furthermore propose an extension of the framework, showing that, in condition of hyper competition, to attain customer agility the customer interface can also be adapted, leading to fine-tuned understanding of customer needs. Jointly, the findings in this paper provide new insights on business models for sustainability in general and distributed solar energy in particular.
