PhD in new ways of organizing in public organizations


 
The Department of Organization at Copenhagen Business School invites applications for a vacant PhD scholarship within the field of public organization. The PhD will be a part of the Center for Public Organization, Value and Innovation (POVI) and participate in seminars and other center activities part of the program. The aim of the center is to understand how public organizations organize themselves in complex modern democracies and how contemporary governance models and innovation play an important role in solving contemporary challenges. These challenges are located in different policy areas such as health, security, public infrastructure, climate, anti-corruption, and equality. The overall ambition of POVI is to advance research in the area of public organizations, value and innovation in Denmark as well as internationally. The PhD project must focus on public organizing and the challenges of new ways of organizing and managing public organizations in a Danish public sector context. Examples could be:  
 
• New ways of public crisis management in e.g. taxation, health and police  
 
• New types of public/private partnerships and their organizing  
 
• Creating and measuring public value as new strategic management and reform tools  
 
• The implementation of new policy reforms, e.g. healthcare, schools, or patient safety reforms  
 
• Public innovation and examples of everyday innovation in different policy areas  
 
• New ways of digital public organization and governance  
 
• The development of bureaucracy in a Danish public sector context   
 
Department of Organization (IOA) pursues a problem-oriented, business in society approach to understanding and intervening in organizations and institutions. Our research is driven by an interest in organization as a practical, situated, contested and changing matter. Our approach is interdisciplinary and combines social-scientific traditions such as organization theory, sociology, science and technology studies, political economy, and social psychology in the analysis of organizing processes and their outcomes. Methodologically, we value qualitative research methods highly and often adopt case study and fieldwork methodology.   
 
The teaching responsibilities associated with the scholarship comprise undergraduate teaching and supervision in subjects such as organizational analysis and qualitative methods.  
 
The Department will give priority to applicants with high grades from their universities.   
 
The three-year PhD programme at CBS allows candidates to conduct research under the supervision of CBS professors, supported by research training courses. The programme is highly international, and you are expected to participate in international research conferences and to spend time abroad as a visiting PhD student. Appointment and salary will be in accordance with the Ministry of Finance’s agreement with the Central Academic Organisation.  
 
General information:   
A PhD scholarship runs for a period of 3 years, and includes teaching obligations equivalent of ½ year’s work (840 work hours). The scholarships are fully salaried positions, according to the national Danish collective agreement. The scholarship includes the tuition fees, office space, travel grants plus a salary, currently starting with per month app. DKK 23.770 (app. 3,160 euro) up to DKK 28.964 (app. 3,860 euro) depending on seniority, plus a pension contribution totalling 17,1 % of 85 per cent of the base salary.  
 
The salary level and appointment is determined by the Ministry of Finance’s collective agreement with the Central Academic Organisation. 
 
The PhD student will be enrolled at the PhD School in Organisation and Management Studies.    
 
To be considered, the candidate should have a basic training at the Masters level (similar to the 3 + 2 Bologna process). An educational background in the social sciences is necessary. The applicant must have successfully completed the Masters degree before commencing PhD at CBS. The applicants must be fluent in English. 
 
The application must include:  
 
• A project description (max. 5 pages): This research proposal should contain a presentation of an original research question, a description of the initial theoretical framework and research methodology, a presentation of the suggested empirical material as well as a work-plan in the form of a Gantt Chart, and finally a brief outline of how the project would fit within the framework of the collaborative research project.  
 
• Copies of a Master’s degree certificate or other certificates of a corresponding level.  
 
• Brief curriculum vitae (CV).  
 
• A list of papers and publications.  
 
• One copy of a selected written work (e.g. Master’s thesis).  
 
• Documentation for English language skills if English is not mother tongue.   
 
Recruitment procedure:   
The Recruitment Committee expects to shortlist at least five applicants to be assessed by the Assessment Committee. All applicants will be notified of their status in the recruitment process shortly after the application deadline.   
 
Applicants selected for assessment will be notified about the composition of the Assessment Committee and later in the process about the result of the assessment. Once the recruitment process is completed each applicant will be notified of the outcome of their application.
