The course Corporate Finance teaches you to derive value of firms, evaluate stock prices, understand corporate governance and solve financial problems.

Purpose and description of the course

The course introduces you to the essentials of Corporate Finance. It is centered around the key financial decisions that firms face every day. In doing so, the course combines popular applied financial methodologies with practical examples and case studies.

In short, the primary focus of the course is to provide you with the necessary tools to be able to solve real-life financial problems. This ranges from determination of a project’s profitability to the impact of financial decisions on stock prices. The course will primarily take a financial management perspective and concentrate on the application of concepts. You will take an active role and analyze and discuss real-life cases in order to internalize the concepts presented in the course.

Your learning outcome

In this course, you will learn to:

  • Understand the system of corporate governance, specifically who owns, manages and controls the firm
  • Read, interpret and critically evaluate financial statements of firms
  • Evaluate and forecast stock prices and identify the drivers of price changes in markets
  • Derive the value of a single project as well as of an entire firm using various methods such as WACC (weighted average cost of capital), APV (adjusted present value), and FTE (flow to equity)
  • Apply corporate finance concepts by implementing them in Excel.

Who should attend this course

Everybody interested in obtaining a thorough understanding of how modern firms make financial decisions, and how these decisions impact financial markets.

The course can be taken as a single course or as part of a full Master of Business Development.

Preconditions for your participation

Participants are expected to have at least a general interest in financial decision-making. Some concepts require the use of MS Excel, but prior experience is not required. All applications will be demonstrated and described in the module.
