PhD defence: Maximilian Schellmann

In order to obtain the PhD degree, Maximilian Schellmann has submitted his thesis entitled: The Politics of Organizing Refugee Camps

Tirsdag, 20 november, 2018 - 13:00 to 15:00

This is a study of refugee camps as spaces of organizing, and of the politics being enacted and produced through such. Hitherto placed at the margins of organization studies, as well as literally being placed at the margins of organizational, life, the study places refugee camps centre stage. It does so through an ethnographic investigation of two refugee camps physically based in Africa, yet organized from way beyond its immediate borders. The study argues that whilst refugee camps are highly organized places, which seek to render homogeneity and to distinguish between what is ‘inside’ and ‘outside’, they also constantly produce inherent ruptures and paradoxes, which in turn produce the possibilities of an emancipatory politics for camp inhabitants, beyond and through their inscription as refugees.
