CONTESTING DEMOCRACY - Political Ideas & Political Sociology in 20th Century Europe

According to Jan-Werner Müller in his main work Contesting Democracy, 20th century Europe was an age of democracy in so far as the Eastern European socialist states and Middle European Fascist states had to relate to democratic values for legitimization of the regimes. The substance of democracy could not be abandoned without maintaining the symbol. Müller will present the interaction between political movements, political ideologies, and political theories. He will also present some of the most influential political theories in their historical context during the 20th century, including Carl Schmitt, Joseph Schumpeter, Hannah Arendt and Jürgen Habermas.
