Al Reuse
AI REUSE will develop advanced theoretical and methodological frameworks for thinking through concepts and practices of reuse of data and algorithms in AI / machine learning (ML) systems and the ethical and political questions these reuse processes give rise to. Based on this work AI REUSE will develop strategies and recommendations that can help the Danish public sector make responsible decisions in relation to ML systems.

Digital Transformations in South Africa
A collaboration between CBS and CCRED (The Centre for Competition, Regulation and Economic Development at the University of Johannesburg, South Africa.)
The digitalisation of economic activity and the growing importance of digital platforms (including online platforms) pose fundamental challenges to the existing set of rules for markets under economic regulation, competition law and industrial policy. Large online platforms cut across search, social media, telecommunications and payments systems, building their offerings on aggregating consumer data. Regulation remains largely unchanged from the end of the 20th century – with separate institutions for different fields (such as telecoms, payments systems and media), and divides between regulation, competition enforcement, consumer protection and data protection (a ‘regulatory patchwork’). There is a growing body of research on these issues, along with position papers and competition and regulation decisions, which constitute a wealth of international experience, particularly in Europe.
This body of both scholarly and practical knowledge in Denmark (and Europe more generally) is a resource South Africa can draw upon to inform its economic development, strategies for industrialisation and the role of the digital economy in these processes. At the same time, researchers in both Denmark and South Africa benefit from understanding the local dynamics of the digital economy in different contexts with a view to establishing the applicability of policy approaches from
Europe to the challenges of regulating digital platforms in the different institutional context of developing countries, including South Africa.

VIEW: Value Invisible Work Efficienc
Four year project 2020-2023, funded by DFF/Independent Research Fund Denmark by 5.8 million DKK
Many Danish public sector, organizations strive to become more efficient by fully orpartly automating administrative casework and developing algorithms that support automated decision-making. But efficiency does not follow from automation. There is often a gap between the promises of business cases and organizational realities. Through qualitative case studies, this research project examines the efficiency ambitions inscribed in the business cases behind automation projects, and investigates how the realized projects both create new tasks for managers and employees, and redistribute work within and among organizations. We argue that substantial elements of this work are unaccounted for (e.g. correction of errors, handling of new types requests, new needs for coordination, training of new skills, data production handling) in formal descriptions of the organization such as budgets and business cases. Drawing on STS, we argue for the value of making such “invisible work" visible.
