- Forsker i videnskabs- og erkendelsesteori med særlig fokus på informations-, kognitions- og kommunikationsvidenskabsteori herunder særligt transfaglige forskningsprogrammer som kybernetik, semiotik, vidensbegreber og deres anvendelighed til forståelse og design af vidensorganisering og videnskabsformidling.
- Medudvikler af biosemiotikken.
- Skaber af Cybersemiotics, der er en integration of Peirceansk semiotik, systemteori, autopoiese og kybernetisk informationsteori.
- Forsker i vidensformidling og popularisering.
Modtager af den anerkendte Warren McCulloch Award 2008 fra The American Society for Cybernetics.
