FRIC’14: Learn from academic heavyweights

At the end of August, the Center for Financial Frictions will host a conference for the most brilliant minds working with the financial crisis and its consequences. David Lando, Director of Center, is proud to be able to attract international academic heavyweights to this conference. Researchers, research candidates, students, and practitioners will have a unique opportunity to learn from the best in the field.

For the second year in a row, the Center for Financial Frictions (FRIC) will host a conference about the economic consequences of financial frictions in global capital markets.  The conference, FRIC'14, places focus on topics related to a financial crisis such as liquidity, systemic risk, and crashes, says David Lando, Director of FRIC and Professor at the Department of Finance.

We have been able to attract world leading researchers again this year. Several of them have written extensively about the global financial crisis and conducted research relevant to the crisis already before it happened. Besides conducting research, they have also been on numerous boards and acted as advisers to central banks and regulatory authorities, says David Lando.

The conference will take place on 25-26 August at CBS' new facilities at Flintholm. Participants can look forward to four keynotes and six presentations. One of the keynote speakers is Viral Acharya, Professor of Finance at the New York University Stern School of Business.

Besides producing important research in his field, Viral Acharya has edited several books in which NYU's professors of finance have addressed the reasons for the financial crisis and the subsequent regulation, says David Lando.

The aim is inspiration

FRIC is a basic research centre at CBS, and was established in 2012 with a grant from the Danish National Research Foundation. Financial frictions are costs or impediments to financial transactions, which have become a popular topic among researchers after the financial crisis began. The costs or the impediments are for instance transactions costs, capital requirements, counterparty risk, illiquidity, and asymmetric information.

Besides conducting world-class research, the purpose of the centre is to inspire staff, industry professionals and students who are considering a career in research. That is also the purpose of FRIC'14.

- If the conference attracts young people towards a research career, then we have achieved a great deal. However, it is also important for us to be on the cutting edge of the latest research by welcoming ten leading researchers within our field, says David Lando.

The industry will also benefit from FRIC'14

The conference also has a lot to offer to people outside the academic world, says David Lando.

- We strongly believe that finance practitioners i.e. asset managers, regulators and risk-managers may benefit from the conference, says David Lando.

In 2013 the conference attracted more than a hundred participants from the academic world and the financial sector. David Lando hopes that this year's conference will attract just as many.
