How to apply

After you have been accepted to CBS, you will receive a link to the application form in your CBS email. You do not need any documentation to apply.

Please note: If you are an international full-degree student you cannot apply for student residences. Read more about your options on International full-degree student

Allocation

Student residences are allocated automatically. You cannot apply in advance under any circumstances. Applying on the first day does not provide any advantage, as all allocations are made through an automated random draw.

Period of lease

The lease period for rooms in the student residences is fixed. Once you accept your allocation, you are responsible for paying rent for the entire semester, even if you plan to depart before it ends.

For CBS Summer University, rooms can be leased for either four or six weeks. This means that if you are enrolled in a two- or three-week course, you may stay in a student residence, but you will be required to pay for a minimum four-week rental period.

Sharing a room

If you wish to share a room with a specific person, both of you must email housing.intoff@cbs.dk within the stated deadline. When submitting your roommate request, please also indicate your dorm preferences.

The shared rooms are at Kathrine Kollegiet and Svanevej Residence only.

Disabilities

If you have a medically documented disability that requires specific accommodation needs, please contact us at housing.intoff@cbs.dk and include your medical documentation. We will do our best to assist you within the options available to us.

  2. If you list a dorm more than once or list only one dorm, your application will be rejected.

Basecamp by Xior

At Basecamp by Xior a start package with linen is optional and you must order and pay for it separately at Basecamp.

Cleaning and laundry service

Students are expected to clean their own rooms, bathrooms and kitchens. There is no cleaning or laundry service.

Deposit

The student residence administrators will refund your deposit approximately eight weeks after the end of your lease period.

A few weeks before the semester ends, you will receive a pre-departure email outlining the steps required to ensure the return of your deposit.

Please note that the cost of extra cleaning, broken or missing items, will be deducted from the refunded amount.

CBS Housing Team does not receive any payments and cannot refund deposits. Payment of rent goes directly to the administrators.

Discounts

You cannot receive a discount by paying your total lease for the whole period at once, but you may save yourself some time, effort and fees if the payment for the whole semester is made on one occasion.

Please note that CBS Housing Team does not receive any payments. All payments are made directly to the owner or administrator of your dorm.

Environment

International environment

You will not be living with Danish students but instead with other international students, unless otherwise noted under the specific residence hall.

Lively environment

When trying to decide if a residence hall is the housing solution for you, you should keep in mind that it is a great way to meet people, there is always somebody around, and if you make an effort this is a great opportunity to get to know people from all over the world.

Quiet environment

It is also important to be aware that all the people and the many activities can sometimes be overwhelming.

So, if you prefer to study in your room and it has to be absolutely quiet, then maybe a large residence hall is not the right place for you. Residences described as "smaller" with a shared kitchen and bathroom.

Furniture and kitchen utensils

All rooms are fully furnished with a bed, a table, a chair, a closet, lamps etc. The kitchens are equipped with basic utensils for cooking and eating. Missing items should be reported to the owner of the residence.

Basecamp by Xior

At Basecamp by Xior, the common kitchens are equipped with basic utensils for cooking and eating. If you also wish to have kitchen utensils for your private kitchenette, you can order and pay for a kitchen start package at Basecamp or bring your own.

Guests

Overnight guests are not permitted.

Only the person named on the Room Reservation is permitted to stay over night in the room.

Internet access

All student residences have Wifi.

Passwords and wifi access information will be provided upon arrival.

Montly services

For all student residences, except Basecamp by Xior, a monthly service fee is charged in addition to the the lease.

The monthly service fee includes:

  • internet access
  • furnishings
  • kitchen equipment
  • duvet
  • pillow
  • linens
  • access to/use of common areas and laundry services (where applicable),
  • housing administration and inspector service

For all student residences, except Basecamp by Xior, utilities (i.e. electricity, water and heating) are included in the room lease.

Basecamp by Xior

At Basecamp by Xior, the monthly services mentioned above (except linen and only kitchen equipment in common kitchens) are included in the lease.

However, at Basecamp utilities (i.e. electricity, water and heating) are paid monthly on account and reconciled at the end of the year based on actual consumption. Any additional amount due will be invoiced subsequently, and any overpayment will be refunded.

Non-smoking

All the residences are non-smoking.

Respect your neighbours

Many student residences are located in the midst of regular residential areas.

Show consideration for your neighbours and avoid playing loud music outside of your room.

No food plans

The student residences are all self-catering. There are no food plans available.

Shared room

In a shared room there are two beds in one room, which is why the rent per person is typically lower than for a single room. If your room number is followed by an A or a B, this generally indicates you will be living in a shared room.

Choosing a roommate

The Housing Application system does not allow you to choose your own room mate.

If you wish to share a room with a specific person, both of you must email housing.intoff@cbs.dk within the stated deadline. When submitting your roommate request, please also indicate your dorm preferences.

The shared rooms are at Kathrine Kollegiet and Svanevej Residence only.

Private housing through CBS

What is private housing?

CBS offers a service connecting students with private landlords for students in the autumn semester who are not allocated a room in student residences.

Private Housing is a broad term and it can be many things, but it is not a home-stay. You will maintain your independence yet at the same time you will get a chance to experience the Danish culture.

Different types of landlords and ladies

Our landlords/ladies could be senior citizens with large houses who rent out a spare room after their children have moved out or families with young children who are looking for an international experience.

Some landlords/ladies are students who wish to let a room, and in rare cases you may even be offered an entire apartment.

Others may be students going on exchange who need someone to rent their room or flat while they are away.

Distance to CBS

Distances from CBS will vary but in most cases you should expect at least a 30 minutes commute to CBS.

Why choose Private Housing?

Private Housing is an excellent opportunity to experience the Danish way of life and to have a quiet and relaxed study environment at home. A successful stay in private housing requires you to be open and flexible. Please check the house rules with your landlord/lady and remember to keep an open line of communication at all times.

Bear in mind that there will almost always be challenges when two cultures meet. You will improve your experience in Denmark considerably if you keep an open mind and show tolerance towards opinions and ways of living that are different from what you are used to.

Staying in a private home

You should consider that you will be renting a room in someone’s private home with access to kitchen and bathroom; this means that you must be prepared to show consideration for someone else’s property.

Learning about Danish culture

An excellent way of learning about the Danish culture and to fit into a Danish environment is to observe how they act and act similarly. You will be surprised how quickly you will feel welcome.

You can also learn some Danish words and practice them with your landlords/ladies. They will feel impressed and will probably help you with your pronunciation.

Place and location

Your private housing offer will always include a room with a bed, a desk for studying, internet access, a dresser/closet for your clothes, and of course access to kitchen and bathroom.

Distance to CBS

Distances from CBS will vary but in most cases you should expect at least a 30 minutes commute to CBS.

Rent and deposit

Price

The price of the room will reflect the facilities to which you have access. The price range of rent per month is currently between DKK 5000-9.000 DKK (2025).

Payment

In private housing you pay rent at the beginning of every month, directly to your landlord/lady.

Upon arrival, you must pay rent for the first 1½ to 2 months along with your deposit.

Deposit

The deposit is equivalent to one month’s rent, unless an alternative arrangement has been agreed with the landlord/lady.

Your deposit will be returned upon your departure. The landlord/lady reserves the right to charge for restoring the premises to their original condition and for cleaning the room and shared areas.

Paying for the whole semester

You are responsible for paying rent for the whole semester.

If for any reason, you have to leave Copenhagen earlier than expected, you must still adhere to the Sublease or Rental Agreement and all of its conditions.

How to apply for private housing

Invitation in your email

If you applied for CBS student residences and did not receive an offer, you will receive an email inviting you to apply for private housing through CBS.

In the email you will find:

  • an application form,
  • a link to our Private Housing Facebook group and
  • important information about your options.

Private housing on your own

You are welcome to look for private housing on your own at the same time. You just need to tell us if you find accommodation yourself.

Private housing facebook group

The Facebook group is a tool to help you get in touch with other students who rent their room while being on exchange abroad.

In the group you can share useful tips and experience with other students. You might even be in luck and find a big apartment you can share with other students from the Facebook group.

Also, the Facebook group is a place where you can find information, guidance and support from the CBS administration.

Check your email

Make sure to check your CBS e-mail often, preferably every day. Sometimes changes occur which we will notify you about via email, and we often need a quick reply. Remember to always check your ‘junk folder’ as well.

Sublease agreement or rental contract

Make sure you understand the terms and conditions regarding your accommodation and your rent.

You must always sign a sublease agreement or a Rental Contract. It will help you later if problems should occur.

When you move in and out

Make sure to go through the apartment, if at all possible, with your landlord/lady upon arrival.

It is also advisable to make an inventory list of missing or damaged items together with the landlord/lady. It is very important to arrange a “check out” inspection with your landlord/lady prior to your departure and make sure you receive your deposit BEFORE you leave the room.

To avoid confusion, we recommend that you take photos both on arrival and on departure.

Free legal aid

If you have any questions about the Rental Contract or sublease agreement you should contact the free legal aid service Copenhagen Legal Aid (Københavns Retshjælp)

How to cancel before arrival

If you wish to cancel your assigned private accommodation before arrival, please contact both your landlord/lady and CBS Housing Team immediately. If you cancel a housing offer, CBS Housing Department will not be able to offer you any other form of accommodation for your stay.

Before leaving Denmark

Cancel your address and CPR number

It is imperative that you cancel your address and CPR number at the local municipality before you leave Denmark. Your landlord will not be able to do this on your behalf.

Departure form

If you live in Frederiksberg or Copenhagen you can use this departure form

Students residing in Frederiksberg must send the form to: Folkeregister@frederiksberg.dk

Students residing in Copenhagen must send the form to: Folkeregister@kff.kk.dk

Finding a place to live

Copenhagen is a very popular city to live in, also for Danes. Finding affordable housing can be challenging. It can be particularly difficult to find a rental place in August and September due to the beginning of the academic year.

We recommend that you begin your hunt before you arrive in Copenhagen, as it may take you 2-3 months to find a place to live.

Housing on Study in Denmark

Renting a room or apartment on your own

There is no central register for advertising private rental properties and apartments in Denmark.

Rental units are often advertised on the internet or found through your personal network, such as colleagues, friends, and acquaintances.

Rental rates

Location location location

Generally renting in Copenhagen is expensive. It is less expensive if you find a place outside central Copenhagen, and even cheaper in the outskirts of Copenhagen or in the suburbs.

Copenhagen is an easy city to get around with public transportation, so living in the suburbs, still leaves you at a reasonable travel distance to work at CBS. Buses, trains and metro run frequently.

Other factors

Private rentals and the rent itself are regulated by the Tenant Consolidation Act (Tenants Laws). Rent for a certain rental is determined by a number of factors:

  • Location
  • Type (apartment, single/family house or single room)
  • Building year
  • Remodeled and other aspects

Deposit

It is normal to pay a deposit when renting accomodation.

Limits

There are limits to the amount that the owner may request in deposit. Legally, the owner can only request up to 3 months deposit and 3 months prepaid rent.

The deposit will remain on the owner's account until the apartment has been inspected for any damages and the heating and other utilities have been settled.

Getting your deposit back

When terminating your leave, if you have prepaid 3 months of rent, you will not need to pay rent for the last 3 months of your lease.

Beware of scam

You should always watch out when you are looking for accommodation. There are many scammers who will try to rent a room or apartment to you which they do not own or which does not exist.

The police offers good advice on how to make yourself more secure in your hunt for housing and avoid scam.

 Make sure to:

  • check that the person in fact owns the room or apartment in question
  • make any payments to a Danish bank account – if possible
  • always use your common sense
  • never let yourself be pressured by an eager letter or landlord

More information

You can find the police’s good advice on the Police's webpage (only in Danish)

Here you can also find more information about how to report scam.

The common room is expected to remain closed until the beginning of 2025. However, an exact end date for the repairs is not available.
