Much of my current work considers policymaking processes, international relations, and the ways in which they shape markets and businesses. In particular, I look at policy towards the rise of China in Europe and the United States.. My recent publications have assessed US policy responses to China’s Belt & Road Initiative and the UK’s 2015 decision to join the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank (AIIB). They have also surveyed the impact of the Trump presidency on US – China relations, Russia's political trajectory, transatlantic alliances, and the wider world.

At the same time, I study contemporary “deglobalizing” processes (insofar as they are taking place), the rise of conservative populism and nationalism, and the implications of all these trends for economic and social policy, politics, markets and business. Should, for example, Brexit and the election of Donald Trump in 2016 be regarded as one-offs or a harbinger of things to come?

What frameworks do I employ? For the most part, my work takes theoretical frameworks and approaches used in domestic policymaking and explores the ways in which they can be used or adapted in foreign policy analysis. Questions of policy continuity and change loom large.

How am I getting all this across? Academic publications and conference presentations aside I also publish commentaries on contemporary political issues (particularly within the UK and US) and have given interviews to many media outlets including DR2, TV2 News, the BBC World Service, Politiken, Information, Weekendavisen, and Jyllands-Posten. I also give presentations and join debates for organisations such as the British Chamber of Commerce in Denmark and at events such as Folkemødet on Bornholm.

I was Program Director of the BSc and MSc International Business & Politics (IBP) for six years. I am now convenor of the EGB research cluster considering Business, Global Shifts and Policy Challenges, sit of the CBS PhD Committee and I serve as EGB’s PhD coordinator.

What projects are underway at the moment? My book, Countering China: US Policy and the Belt & Road Initiative, will be published later in 2023. Alongside articles two book projects are currently under contract: (1) Giving Up on Globalization? and (2) (with Steve Hurst) Donald Trump and the Transformation of US Foreign Policy
