4th ITEPE Conference

The Status of Authority in the Globalising Economy:Beyond the Public/Private Distinction

Date:
10-11 December 2015

Theme and Purpose:
Over the past decades, large segments of the scholarly debate has been dominated by the perception that state based public authority has been increasingly challenged or even substantially eroded due to increased economic globalisation, the migration of regulatory capacities into transnational settings, and an ever-shorter life cycle of authoritative knowledge. However, many of these accounts fall short of grasping the transformation of authority. They conflate public authority with state authority and overlook how private norm creating frameworks also establish and fulfil public functions. On this background, the conference sets out to redefine the very notions of public and private authority and their relation to and relevance for the related concepts of law, power, coordination, legitimacy and democracy. The conference is sponsored by the European Research Council within the framework of the project ‘Institutional Transformation in European Political Economy – A Socio-Legal Approach’ (ITEPE) hosted by the Department of Business and Politics, Copenhagen Business School and is the 4th conference within the ITEPE conference series.
