Kunsten og Louisiana rykker ind på CBS
On 22 February 2017 CBS will open a permanent exhibition space for video art at the university called CBS Digital Art Space, which will display selected and curated art in collaboration with Danish and foreign artists and art institutions.
The exhibition space is centrally located in CBS’ building on Solbjerg Plads, where thousands of people pass by daily. This provides artists and art institutions a unique opportunity to reach out to many Danish and international students and staff.
Art museum collaboration
Louisiana Museum of Modern Art will lend video artworks to the digital exhibition space for the next year and a half. The first piece that will be shown is Icelander Ragnar Kjartansson’s Me and My Mother from 2010. CBS and Louisiana are excited to be working together and look forward to bringing video art up close to the students.
“Over the past fifty years, showing moving images is a form of art that has slowly been adopted within the framework of museums and art institutions. Establishing a digital exhibition space centrally at CBS creates a new opportunity to display art for the public at the university. We think that this is both ambitious and valuable,” explains Poul Erik Tøjner, director of Louisiana.
Working with an internationally recognised partner like Louisiana will allow CBS to achieve its goal of displaying high quality digital artwork in an exhibition space that appeals not only to students and staff but also the wider public. The aim is for the exhibited video art to create dialogue and reflection within, across and outside the boundaries of the university.
Student-initiated project
Initiator of the project, CBS student Christoffer Faurschou, says: ”I’m really pleased that CBS listens to students and embraces initiatives like this.”
President of CBS Per Holten-Andersen supports the project one-hundred percent, stating: “The digital exhibition space will bring art even closer to our students, staff and the wider public, which is why the project has my full support and that of CBS.”
The hope is that the video art will challenge people, create dialogue and get students and staff to reflect on the themes presented in the works.
Distinctly unique context for video art
Contemporary art is often characterised by its involvement in and creative vision concerning many of the global themes and challenges CBS students encounter while doing their degree and in their future professional life. Video art in an educational institution like CBS can help put the various social, financial, political and educational themes into a certain perspective.
”The setting of CBS provides a unique context that artists and art institutions can play with and confront. Some works will hopefully inspire lively debate among students and staff on themes such as climate issues, consumerism and CSR,” explains Faurschou.
In the future CBS would like to integrate art into both its research and education programmes. CBS already offers a degree in collaboration with the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts, Schools of Architecture, Design and Conservation, also known as KADK.
