Inaugural Lecture - Professor MSO Sof Trane

Drawing on case evidence from an automotive manufacturer, this inaugural lecture will focus on problems in control of innovative processes in manufacturing firms.

Thursday, May 12, 2016 - 15:00 to 17:00

Control in complex innovation networks
Drawing on case evidence from an automotive manufacturer, the lecture will focus on two problems in control of innovative processes in manufacturing firms. The first problem has to do with quantification of intangible factors in the product development process. The second problem has to do with control and coordination of unquantifiable factors such as design and quantifiable factors such as technological innovation. The lecture will here discuss how the difference in measurability makes it relevant to control design by other mechanisms than technological innovation and to separate design from technological innovation. This separation is intended to increase creativity and aesthetic value of the product. However, designing a product without focusing on cost and technical performance is problematic because a product’s design affects its costs and technical performance. This makes tight integration beneficial. The lecture develops this dilemma and analyzes control and coordination mechanisms for managing the dilemma.

The lecture ends with reflections on how to conduct teaching relevant research in management accounting and articulates a research agenda for research into management accounting in complex organizations.

Sof Thrane is professor (MSO) at the Department of Operations Management and the Head of the doctoral school LIMAC at Copenhagen Business School. Sof Thrane's research focuses on how interfirm relationships and innovation network develop and change, with a focus on how management accounting is used to affect development. This research interest has led to a focus on how things are made calculable, and how practices and management control systems develop. Emerging research interests include risk management and pricing.
