Apparel at work

Work uniforms and women in male dominated manual occupations

The doctoral thesis examines the standardisation of workwear in the gender-segregated labour market in Norway. It presents findings in four articles based on fieldwork in six manual male-dominated occupations, as well as an innovation process with the aim of developing work clothes for women. Exploring the potential that lies in the work uniform as an agent of change for the gender-segregated labour market the doctoral thesis makes an interesting contribution regarding the understanding of the complex and ambivalent negotiations and practices of women in such occupations. It also outlines new avenues of research and practice in this area.
