Wednesday, May 28, 2014 - 15:30 to 16:30

Mærsk Mc-Kinney Møller Endowed Chair in Entrepreneurship, Mirjam van Praag, presents her inaugural lecture:

‘Entrepreneurs Don’t Grow on Trees. What More can we Conclude from Research?’

Abstract:
A better understanding of the driving forces towards successful entrepreneurship is valuable for policy makers, managers and entrepreneurs. Research may contribute to a greater understanding of entrepreneurship.

This lecture consists of three parts. In the first part I will argue that measuring effects instead of correlations is vital for obtaining genuinely useful evidence-based implications. Research methods aiming at measuring effects have been developed in fascinating ways in the past few decades. The application of laboratory, field, and natural experiments and econometric methods plays a key role in this development.

In the second part, I will discuss novel research projects in this spirit applied to entrepreneurship. Topics include the effect of entrepreneurship education, effective entrepreneurial teams, and the role of entrepreneurial parents and role models.

The third part will be devoted to experiments that enhance our understanding of the entrepreneur’s preferences and behavior in terms of, for instance, risk taking, loss aversion, and optimism.
