Management Accounting as tools of how accounting data can be collected, stored, manipulated and distributed has undergone tremendous developments
in the last two decades. In almost any respect it has meant an expansion.
In terms of ‘time’ we have shifted from ‘short term approaches’ to ‘long term approaches’, regards data collection more emphasis has been put to ‘non-financial’ data compared with ‘financial’ and more emphasis has been put to
‘external’ data compared with ‘internal’ data. Rather that just looking at the data-modelling organisational perspectives are taken more into account when the accounting systems are being designed. The ERP- software has opened new ways of data manipulation that were not feasible with old technology and finally the focus on sustainability has expanded the accountability for what should be accounted for. Each of these expansions presents numerous challenges for research as well as teaching.
