The Power of Resistance: India’s National Oil Company and International Activism in Sudan

Luke Patey
In October 2002 the Canadian oil company Talisman announced that it was selling its stake in a profitable venture in Sudan. Talisman had been the target of a fervent divestment campaign orchestrated by international activists calling on the company to halt its activities on account of the detrimental influence oil development was having on a long-standing civil war in the country. Soon enough other western oil companies would follow suit and sell off their investments in the face of condemnation from activists.

Traveling technologies and transformations in health care

Annegrete Juul Nielsen
Traveling technologies and transformations in health care” investigates how health care programs move between practices and are successful at spreading geographically.
When a health care program is widely disseminated it is often explained with reference to the program simply being the most effective solution at hand or because the program currently is an unavoidable solution to almost any problem.
With inspiration from science and technology studies (STS) the dissertation proposes to examine this subject through the notion of traveling technologies. This approach entails a focus on how the programs are done and un-done in encounters across spatiotemporal boundaries and how they in the process come to re-frame problems and places. In doing so, the approach does not only account for the “strong network” of circulating programs, but also details the travel expenditures involved.

Knowledge Management Systems in Practice – A Work Place Study

Kristian Tørning
Kristian Tørning’s industrial PhD work contributes to the existing body of knowledge on how we design computer systems, particularly multiuser software for knowledge sharing and creation in globally diffused companies.
This is achieved by means of a work place study of a global industrial engineering conglomerate. The thesis explores the situation that workers are in, since they are meant to share and develop knowledge in a portal based Knowledge Management System (KMS).
The study indentifies a set of problems that prevents knowledge sharing from taking place. The study also explore whether these problems could, to some degree, be mitigated by employing persuasive design, which is a new stance towards design where the aim is to directly change the user’s behavior, i.e., persuading more knowledge sharing.

Håndtering af usikkerhed i film- og byggeprojekter

Jesper Schlamovitz

Markets of good Intentions

Adam Buchhorn
Markets of good Intentions. Constructing and Organizing Biogas Markets Amid Fragility and Controversy
How is an abundance of worthless animal manure transformed into a valuable green technology to realize the good intentions of mitigating climate change and agricultural pollution, securing national energy supply, and advancing exports, and job creation?
By 2020, the Danish government expects production of renewable energy from so-called biogas plants to triple. But as the project demonstrates, the markets necessary for biogas plants to be constructed are neither adequately framed nor able to facilitate the transaction that renders such green technology valuable. In short, they are markets of good intentions. Unless steps are taken, the government will end up with are more ‘worthless’ green technology and good intentions.
By empirically studying the process of framing biogas markets in Denmark this project reveals the critical role of overflows and controversies in market-making, for instance when biogas technology ‘overflows’ with pungent manure or when political controversies over energy policy questions the value of biogas. One the one hand, they are essential in providing biogas with a license to operate. On the other hand, unless they are mitigated biogas plants cannot be constructed.

Det faktiske livs forbindtlighed: Førsokratisk informeret, ny-aristotelisk ἦθος--tænkning hos Martin Heidegger

Tommy Moesby-Jensen

Emerging Organizations - In between local translation, institutional logics and discourse

Susanne Boch Waldorff
The thesis explores the efforts to reorganize the provision of health care services following the restructuring of the Danish public sector in 2007. The focus is on the meaning that municipalities used to legitimate a new organizational concept - a health care center. The results indicate that a heterogeneous context facilitated the construction of various local meanings including a traditional focus on disease treatment and a focus on disease prevention and health promotion.
The theoretical core of the dissertation is concerned with the ways in which the emerging health care centres are translated and legitimated by shifting logics and different discursive strategies. The thesis seeks to expand the neo-institutional approach with insights from analyses of translation processes and Critical Discourse Analysis.

Værdi i rekruttering – den sikre beslutning

Ulrik Schultz Brix

Strategic Change Management: Change Management Challenges in the Danish Police Reform

Rex Degnegaard
This PhD thesis is the result of a longitudinal study on change processes in the Danish Police Reform. The thesis focuses on unforeseen consequences of the Danish police reform in regards to change management and organizational implications. The study rests on a multi-sited methodology compromising an array of research methods.
The findings in the study point to the complex processes of change at many different levels of the police. Furthermore the study emphasizes the need for elevating managerial efforts in vast organizational transformation to a strategic level. The study shows how this is particularly relevant in reorganizing heavily institutionalized professional organizations and stresses how a strategic change management perspective must necessarily include the external level, the managerial level, and the operational level.
The study contributes primarily to the literature on change management, neo-institutionalism, and to the scarce yet emerging theoretical strands of police management.

What we talk about when we talk about space

Marianne Stang Våland
What we talk about when we talk about space. End user participation between processes of organizational and architectural design
In the thesis, she explores the link between two design processes that have traditionally been considered separate and sequential: the organizational and the architectural design processes. The study is based on the increasing interest in space and architecture as a potential strategic vehicle in contemporary management, an interest that is shared by some scholars within organization studies. However, only few research contributions are based on empirical studies of the processes involved.
Two contemporary building projects have been studied: the Town Hall of Hillerød Municipality and Danish architecture firm, Arkitema’s Copenhagen office domicile. Through the exploration of how organized end user participation was applied as an integrated part of these design processes, the thesis identifies some of the linkages that such activities generate, and discusses the mutual effects they seem to induce.
The study builds on two different theoretical schools: sensemaking in organizations and actor-network theory.

Metaphysical Labour: Flexibility, Performance and Commitment in Work-Life Management

Anders Raastrup Kristensen
The thesis ‘Metaphysical Labour’ offers a critical contribution to the theories of work-life balance. Within the contemporary theoretical perspectives on work and life the individuals are constructed as being responsible for work-life balance by turning it into a problem of the personal behaviour, decisions, psychological traits and family condition of the human subject. Drawing on Deleuzian philosophy the thesis offers a different perspective that is not based on the individual constitution of the boundary between work and home. Instead, it is argued that the constitution of the relation of work and life is to be found in its individuating effects such as how the employees gives expression to flexibility, performance and commitment. In this sense the perspective of work-life management turns the theories of work-life balance on their head, because it begins with the constituting effects and not the constituting cause of the human subject. This transformation is shown and analyzed in two case studies.
The thesis is funded as an Industrial PhD project by Rambøll Management and the Danish Research Council.

‘The Great Health of Melancholy – A Study of the Pathologies of Performativity’

Rasmus Johnsen
The thesis 'The Great Health of Melancholy' is an attempt to create a philosophical perspective on issues like stress and depression in contemporary society. Through a reading of three motifs in the broad and colourful history of melancholy - melancholy in Antiquity, Acedia in the Middle Ages and neurasthenia around the turn of the 19th century - it engages with themes associated with modern day lifestyles: management of the Self, self-development, self-regulation and the pathologies of failure in an attempt to understand the subjectivity of contemporary individuality.

”Collaborative R&D Capabilities: In Search of Micro-Foundations”

Line Gry Knudsen
In many firms R&D collaboration is seen as an important mean to foster opportunities to learn, and to access, transfer and utilize knowledge to create innovative solutions. Yet, in spite of the adduced virtues of R&D collaboration high failure rates are often reported in inter-firm alliances. Thus, a better understanding of the internal organizational mechanisms that facilitate the collaborative processes are needed. How, we may ask, are specific collaborative capabilities developed to ensure collaborative success, and what is their composition in terms of organizational and individual level factors? This thesis addresses these and related questions.

The Business of Co-creation and the Co-creation of Business

Maja Lotz
Danish manufacturing companies collaborate and compete in a global environment characterized by relentless change and high ambiguity. In response firms have developed increasingly complex collaborative interdependencies within and among organizations. These collaborations call for (and enable) organizational members to engage in ongoing distributed search for co-creative innovations. The dissertation studies this poorly understood process, exploring how people in Danish manufacturing companies co-create new work practices, roles, communing relationships and products in experimental ways.
The dissertation contributes to a micro-level understanding of the dynamics of co-creation in modern organizations asking: what and who co-create(s), and how does this operate in contemporary organizational life? It seeks to analyze and understand these firm dynamics of co-creation by focusing on the level of everyday work roles, "communing" and "work organizing practices" that generate a constant sense of belief and doubt thus helping organizational members to redefine existing work practices, learn and improve.
By illuminating the inner mechanisms (or relational dynamics) of these work organizing practices and how they allow for human and organizational growth, the study gives content to the notion of the so-called "learning organization" and offers some promising routes towards co-creating such organizational forms. It thus casts light on the Danish transformation process towards new organizational patterns of production, organizing and innovation able to meet (and prosper from) the demands of the global economy and the rising competitive pressures it brings.

Narrative Construction of Leader Identity in a Leader Development Program Context

Gitte Petersen Jakobsen
With the increasing globalization, new organizational structures, and rapid change the leader has been increasingly individualized and personalized. The leader has been put under pressure to reveal a leadership, in which the personality of the individual leader is increasingly important. Moreover, the individual leader has become central for creating and communicating organizational meaning, and the leaders’ personal conduct, ethics and identity are taken to be symbolic of the organizational brand. This is reflected in a growing demand for leader development programs with a personal orientation, and psychological oriented development focused on the individual leaders’ personal challenges.
This dissertation explores the narrative construction of leader identity in the context of a leader development program, examining the processes and the content of identity work of leaders. Empirically five Danish executives from five different industries have been studied in a three year period. The narrative analytical framework illuminates the thematic, temporal and relational aspects of the five leaders’ narrative accounts. Hence, the analytical strategy analyzes the narrative recourses of: problem stories, preferred stories, and the negotiation of subject positions used by the five leaders in constructing certain situated leader identities. The dissertation contributes to critical management theory by specifying the thematic content of identity work, and by empirically identifying five paradoxes of the leader occupation. The dissertation argues that these paradoxes of the leader occupation are ingrained in the leader occupation by force of the western capitalist societal organizing of life, which positions the leaders as a mediator of paradoxical circumstance.
The dissertation concludes that leader practice is less of an intrinsic problem-solving task and more of a reflective practice embedded in social context. Hence, acknowledging that the leader occupation entails paradoxes that cannot be solved, but only reflectively managed and continuously balanced in interaction with actual leader practice.

Sense from Silence – A Basis for Organised Action?

Tine Murphy
Sense from Silence – A Basis for Organised Action? How do Sensemaking Processes with Minimal Sharing Relate to the Reproduction of Organised Action?
How do mutually dependent actors in the same formal organisation become motivated to continue to perform coordinated non-routine actions when shared articulated sensemaking is limited? This is explored through a study of a voluntary organisation of young tutors. The results indicate that ambiguous and limited shared articulation can in certain cases support rather than undermine organised action. This contrasts with mainstream sensemaking theory.
The thesis seeks to expand, deepen and vitalise sensemaking theory in resolving the paradox. It is suggested that because of the absence of shared articulated sensemaking the actors can continue to meet in the act of tutoring while they negotiate and take up diverse subject positions by actualising multiple arenas spanning the boundary of the formal organisation. Behavioural cues flowing between organisational members are found to play a significant role in each members sensemaking process.

Inspirations for a new sociology of art. A sociomaterial study of development processes in the Danish film industry
Based on a multi case study this thesis looks into the development of film projects in the Danish film industry; how ideas are transformed into realizable projects. The thesis presents a theoretical framework which is centred on the emergent perspective of a new sociomaterial sociology of art. By incorporating the product as an active participant in cultural practices, the sociomaterial sociology of art identifies the co-production of cultural products and the social relations around them. The thesis aims to further this perspective by means of empirical analyses of the development of cultural products.

Position and Reposition in Networks – Exemplified by the Transformation of the Danish Pine Furniture Manufacturers.

Salla Lutz
This PhD-project contributes to the enhanced understanding of how firms can change position in business networks. This is done by following three pine furniture manufacturers' transformation from own manufacturing activities to the purchases of ready-made furniture instead. The research indicates that in order to change position, amendments in a firm's role, relationships and capabilities are necessary. Moreover, change in a firm's position is also dependent on its ability to react upon change in terms of proactive versus reactive behaviour.

Tune in, Breakdown and Reboot – on the production of the self-managing employee

Michael Pedersen
The thesis focus on one particular feature in the on-going debate on occupational stress: how stress relates to the burgeoning interest in employees’ ability to activate and manage their subjectivity in ways that result in productive cooperation. In short how stress relates to self-management. However, the thesis argues that stress is more than an unfortunate pathology of particular features of self-management it also impacts what kind of employees we are expected to be when self-managing. The thesis suggest that being self-managing and stress-fit involve the ability of employees to tune in to a life of productivity without breaking-down their body and soul. In fact the potential break-down of stress should act as an internal limit for personal productivity. As a way of rebooting to an ever more efficient self-management. Drawing on Deleuze and Guattari’s ontology of social machines the thesis analyze the nuts and bolts of this tune in, breakdown and reboot movement and suggest that we are dealing with a social machinery which produce assumptions about self-management and stress that centers on the individual rather than the collective as the preferred site of stress- intervention.

Wound Interrupted – On the Vulnerability of Diversity Management

Sara L. Muhr
Drawing on Levinasian ethics, the thesis is a critical investigation into the ethical foundations of diversity management. This field justifies its focus on differences by claiming it to be from an ethical wish to create equality and justice. Differences are then categorized and subordinated to guidelines and initiatives. But by focusing on the categorical differences, the initiatives often risk creating greater negative attention to minorities and thus even greater segregation. The thesis suggests a change in ethical perspective that shifts focus from categorization of difference to an exploration of otherness.

Public- Private Partnerships: Meaning and Practice

Guðrið Weihe
The dissertation unravels the conceptual perplexities that characterize the debate on public-private partnerships (PPPs). Weihe’s research provides a new understanding of how participants within PPPs develop relationships once contracts have been signed. Previous research on PPPs has been dominated by a concern with technical, legal and financial issues in the pre-contract phase. This dissertation provides a relational approach that provides a new typology of PPPs and fills in an important gap in the literature by specifying how PPPs operate in practice. As Weihe demonstrates, crucial to the management of PPPs in practice are participants’ perceptions of trust, reciprocity, joint decision-making processes, and performance.

Green and Fragile - A Study on Markets and the Natural Environment

Satu Reijonen
The thesis investigates construction of markets for environmentally friendly products by looking into environmental friendliness as a product quality in relation to a particular medical device, a urine bag. The role of environmental friendliness in the process of qualification of the product is followed in product development, marketing, procurement and use – as well as in other practices where the environmental friendliness of the product is at stake. Drawing on constructivist market studies, the dissertation shows environmental friendliness as a fragile product quality whose existence is negotiated in various locations. Furthermore, the modalities of relating environmental friendliness to other product qualities are analyzed.

The Performative Power of Competence. An Inquiry into Subjectivity and Social Technologies at Work

Anders Bojesen
The thesis examines what it means to be competent in today's working practice. As its empirical foundation the thesis accounts for competence development processes in four public institutions: Biocentrum - DTU (DTU Biosys), Center for Videregaaende Uddannelse Storkoebenhavn (Centre for Higher Education, Copenhagen), Danmarks Miljoeundersoegelser (National Environmental Research Institute) and Vejdirektoratet (the Danish Road Directorate).*
The main argument of the thesis is that competence as concept and event cannot be contained; it does not hold an essence, rather it works through a performative power, which perpetually makes us seek the competent.

Aesthetic Design as an Element of Service Innovation in New Technology-based Firms.

Marina Candi
Current international trends increase the pressure on the companies' supply chain in terms of speed, product diversity, integration etc. In this dissertation it is assumed these developments result in an increased need for risk management within supply chain management. Theories most often applied within the SCM domain are analysed against a number of supply chain risks - and against the chosen perspective on SCM. Empirically SCM and Supply Chain Risk Management practices are described in ten case studies of Danish manufacturing companies. Despite rejecting the 'Innovation Perspective' on SCM Innovation seems to play a role within Supply Chain Risk Management

Management Consulting in Action. Value creation and ambiguity in client-consultant relations.

Irene Skovgaard Smith
The PhD thesis is an empirically based study of management consulting in the context of two assignments undertaken by two Danish consulting firms. The assignments were characterised by extensive consultant involvement in change implementation and engagement with a range of managers and employees in the client organisation. The thesis explores patterns of how the consultants and what they do are experienced and defined by these different internal actors in the two client organisations. The purpose is to show how consultants become positioned in the social contexts they enter and what opportunities and limitations this position creates.

Kampen om telefonen. Det danske telefonvæsen under den tyske besættelse 1940-1945.

Mark Mau
