Academic Profile & Strategy
Academic research in the field of Service Management has had a late appearance in Denmark. Most other countries initiated a significant research effort parallel to the growth of tourism in the 1960’s. Hospitality colleges were established, and business schools and universities in a large number of countries began to focus on this area of education.
The late development of this area of research in Denmark has made it possible for Danish researchers to learn from the experiences made in other countries and, furthermore, to include the aspects of internationalisation and globalisation in the areas of tourism and culture.
In this way the Center for Tourism and Culture Management has established an independent profile with a scholarly focal point, where the ‘heavy’ disciplines of business economics are combined with the disciplines of economic psychology, culture, management, organisation and economic geography. Quantitative and qualitative working methods are used both inductively and deductively.
Theoretical as well as applied research lies within the scholarly area of TCM.
TCM forms the organisational frame for new research within the area of service management, mainly focused on the following business activities:
- Tourism and hospitality
- Cultural activities and institutions, including sports
- Leisure activities and institutions (leisure management)
- Travel activities connected to leisure and tourism
- Service and Experienceeconomy
- Public planning.
TCM cooperates with companies and other external partners on specific research projects.
Furthermore, TCM aims to maintain its position as an inspiring and competent research environment, attracting and maintaining qualified national and international scholars.
Additionally, TCM actively participates in and arranges international conferences, workshops, symposiums and seminars within the areas of tourism and culture management.
TCM, finally, promotes research results through scientific media, lectures at Copenhagen Business School, and partnerships with companies etc.
