Industrial PhD at Coloplast/CBS:
The theme of my PhD project is; how can companies (in specific the operations division of Coloplast) use intrinsic valuation to align internal decision making and management control with value creation for investors?
Coloplast develops products and services that make life easier for people with very personal and private medical conditions. Coloplast’s business includes ostomy care, urology and continence care, and wound and skin care (to read more about Coloplast please visit

). From the point of view of Coloplast the immediate objective is to directly link operational measures with intrinsic valuation. When
used for decision making and control such measures are normatively suggested to increase value creation in decision making and in the performance of activities. At once, the competitiveness of the firm is assumed to increase as well.
In my project I investigate techniques used in practice to establish such causal linkages between operational measures and value creation. The cases within Coloplast have been the Global Operations Strategy process and the standardization of decision making and control of make/buy (sourcing/insourcing) projects. The cases are used to explore how and when techniques for causal linkages are applied in practice and to explore the relevance of different techniques and control packages across operational settings. Finally, the validity and transferability of the practices, applied by Coloplast, are tested through Monte Carlo simulation. The Monte Carlo simulation is programmed upon a flexible data structure that can be used to imitate various activity and resource structures.
