New book on our obligation to substantiate our utterances by Øjvind Larsen
In democratic society, we all have the right to speak, but we also have a moral obligation to substantiate our utterances, says Associate Professor and Doctor of Philosophy Øjvind Larsen from the Department of Management, Politics and Philosophy.
This is the message of his new book The Right to Dissent. In the book, Øjvind Larsen takes a critical approach to modern society’s perception of what is right and wrong. The right to dissent needs to be safeguarded through participation in democratic forums and by cultivating our rights in public.
Habermas’s communication theory.
The etchical concepts presented in The Right to Dissent is a reinterpretation of the German philosopher Jürgen Habermas’s communication ethics and political philosophy. Concepts such as freedom, the right to dissent and well-considered criticism are integrated and put into the perspective of Plato, Aristotle, Kant, Hegel, Kirkegaard and Rawls.
Øjvind Larsen has further developed his philosophical theories in a sociological discussion about society, the public sphere, politics, legislation and globalisation from a classical sociological standpoint – represented by Marx, Weber, Durkheim, Horkheimer, Adorno, Marcuse, Bauman, Foucault and Bourdieu.
