My research interests include the study of phenomena related to online communication within and outside the organization with quantitative, qualitative and network analytical methods. This also relates to important issues of information transfer or bottom-up community emergence as a part of knowledge management initiatives. The special perspective of understanding the complexity of bottom-up developments in an organization can be compared and contrasted with institutionally administered processes and communication patterns. Often enough, both diverge considerably.
One special focus is on advancing methods for dynamic network analysis for improving our understanding of emerging structures and processes of networking among people. The novel approach of event-oriented dynamic network analysis and an analysis of e-mail dynamics has been published in the journal Information Systems Research. There is also a software implementation based on these methods, the dynamic SNA Tool Commetrix ( www.commetrix.net ). Further there is the research group "IKM research" as a collaboration effort of CBS an TU Berlin ( www.ikmresearch.de ).
Other issues I am interested in is diffusion patterns in networks, search processes of employees, aspects of information overload, and recently the role of affect and sentiment for online interaction.
