CIBEM's five Core Projects are:
- Outward FDI from emerging economies (link). This project aims to deepen both the theoretical and empirical understanding of the determinants, strategies, and effects (both in home and host countries) of the rapidly growing outward FDI from emerging economies.
- The financial crisis and emerging markets (link). The impact of the financial crisis on emerging economies varies from deep crisis in the Baltic States to seemingly milder effects in China and other parts of East Asia. This project analyses the diverse pattern, and explores responses and long term prospects for several regions, with the European transition economies as a first case.
- Chinese state-owned enterprises (link). One of the most distinct structural features of the Chinese economy is the strong position of state-owned enterprises, which remain dominant in many industries despite two decades of economic reform. The purpose of this project is to examine the history, domestic operations, internationalization, and political relations of Chinese SOEs in order to develop a better theoretical understanding of how these enterprises differ from other international companies in various dimensions, e.g. strategy, organization, management, and performance.
- The brewing industry (link). The brewing industry is one of few truly global industries, where almost every country in the world has domestic production capability, at the same time as large global players like Heineken, Carlsberg, and SAB are present in almost every market. This combination reflects an industry where production technology is simple, but where other links in the value chain (distribution, marketing) are very complex and exhibit large economies of scale. By essentially holding production technology constant, this project makes it possible to analyze other elements of market development, competition, and internationalization with more clarity. It also provides opportunities for researchers with very diverse specialization to work together in a joint project, exploiting the possibilities to add value through synergies and complementarities.
- Emerging markets and the art industry (link). The art industry is also an industry where emerging markets are not handicapped by barriers to entry caused by narrowly defined production technology. However, there are great differences between national art markets, caused by cultural, institutional, and structural factors. This project studies the development of art markets in several East Asian economies at several different levels of analysis, including policies at the national level; actors, structure and competition at the industry level; and preferences and perceptions at the individual level.
