The project is supported by a grant from The Danish Council for Independent Research | Humanities (FKK).

The main objective of my project is to examine how argumentative texts are structured cross-linguistically. My research is corpus-based in examining a comparable corpus of political speeches from the European Parliament in Danish, English and Italian, which structures are mapped both with regards to discourse structure, i.e. in which way the clauses and sentences of the texts are related rhetorically, and with regards to text structure, i.e. in which way the clauses and sentences of the texts are realized grammatically. My theoretical point of departure is cognitive linguistics, which means that cross-linguistic variations are related to (socio-)cultural and mental differences, while similarities are linked to fundamental principles on successful communication (e.g. coherence and cohesion). With my project I hope to be able to relate linguistic tendencies to cultural and cognitive phenomena and to explain psychological and linguistic strategies for persuasion and argumentation.
