Why bother about statistics – and how? Some basic concepts illustrated in R
This presentation is motivated by a sense that many researchers at ISV and IKK either already work on quantitative data or would like to do so, but perhaps lack some statistical tools. I want to present some basic statistical concepts and techniques that I, as a quantitative linguist with no mathematical background, have found useful. I will also introduce the statistics programme 'R'. 'R' is an open-source (free) programme that is very flexible and can perform operations from the most basic addition and subtraction to the most complex and specialised statistical models. I will use 'R' to illustrate the most important concepts with data examples.
I will begin the presentation by discussing the difference between descriptive and inferential statistics: descriptive statistics is useful for describing a dataset, while inferential statistical methods allow the researcher to generalise beyond the data collected. Then, I will focus on what is required to allow such generalisation. Finally, I will talk about how different hypotheses can be tested in different empirical designs and about the statistical tests that are appropriate for the different designs.
The presentation will be in English.
