Morten Knudsen's research interests are concentrated on organization processes and transformation in the Scandinavian welfare state with specific focus on the health care system. Departing from the classical sociological question of the possibility of social order he studies the various ways in which public organizations emerge. Currently, he is interested in standards, indicators and similar organizational techniques. Central questions are: how do these techniques construct the organizations, the employees, and the patients in new ways? Furthermore, he is interested in how (and with which constitutive effects) public organizations are constructed and how they attempt to stabilize themselves by means of selfdescriptions.
Theoretically he draws on systems theory, Foucault-related traditions, classical sociologists like Marx, Simmel, Durkheim, and Weber, critical theory etc.
