Research interests
My primary academic interest is in how qualitative assessments and judgements are made within organisations. This field opens onto issues such as the moral and ethical appropriateness of some actions over others; how qualitative assessments about who is most appropriate for certain tasks impact personnel and staffing decisions and how these arise from and lead to differentiation and discrimination; judgements about artistic quality in collective production processes; the use of texts and historical decisions versus the use of "spontaneous" or current, non-codified assessments/and or power in making such assessments; and how organisational change and rupture are impacted by alterations in qualitative assessments. These processes can be seen as fitting into the wider discussion of the relationship between structure, culture and agency, as well as the distinction between "case" and "biography".
