Lilie Chouliaraki
Lilie Chouliaraki is Chair in Media and Communications at the Department of Media and Communications, London School of Economics (LSE), and co-Director of the Department's PhD Programme. She is the research director of POLIS, the forum for debate and research into journalism and society, at the LSE in collaboration with the London College of Communication
Chouliaraki holds a Ph.D. degree (Discourse Analysis) from the University of Lancaster (1995), from where she also obtained her MA (Applied Linguistics) 1991. She also holds a BA from the School of Philosophy, University of Athens. Prior to joining LSE in 2007, Chouliaraki was Professor of Media and Discourse Studies at CBS. From 1997-2001, she was Associate Professor at the Department of Film and Media Studies, University of Copenhagen, and, from 1997-2001, Associate Professor at the Department of Scandinavian Studies, also at the University of Copenhagen
Chouliaraki’s research interests today broadly include Social and Cultural Theory, Ethics and Political Philosophy as well as Corporate Communication, Communication Theory and Discourse Studies. Her research focuses on the nature of mediated public discourse from an ethical and political perspective. She has published extensively on the moral implications of the media in contemporary public life, particularly on the link between mediation, social action and cosmopolitan citizenship. Part of her research further addresses the intersection between politics, culture and corporate discourse.
Chouliaraki is the author of The Spectatorship of Suffering (Sage, London 2006). Her most recent edited books include The Soft Power of War (Benjamins Publications, Amsterdam and Philadelphia 2007) and (with Mette Morsing) Media, Organisations, Identity (Palgrave, London 2008). Her work has been widely published in international books and journals such as Television and New Media, Journal of Management Studies, Critical Discourse Studies Discourse and Society, Visual Communication, Social Semiotics, Linguistics and Education, Journal of Language and Politics, Global Media and Communication.
Chouliaraki is a regular keynote speaker in media-related academic events around the world, including Georgetown University at Washington DC, City University of Hong-Kong, the LSE in London, the Sorbonne, Paris as well the Universities of Stockholm and Oslo.
