101: Mandarin Chinese Beginner’s Level 1

Prerequisite/progression of the course
For those who have no prior knowledge of Mandarin. If you are planning to travel to China or are just curious about the Chinese language, this course is an easy and practical way to get started.
Course content, structure and teaching
The course is designed to provide an introduction at a reasonable pace in basic Chinese with the emphasis on developing practical listening, speaking and reading skills. Through the Chinese phonetic system, simple conversations, basic vocabulary and sentence patterns, this course provides oral practice related to scenario-based conversations.

Learning Objectives
After completing the course, students should be able to:
· greet people
· introduce themselves and others, e.g. information on nationalities, age and occupation
· describe basic objects
· talk about the weather
· describe likes and dislikes
· talk about hobbies and abilities
· talk about sufficiency and lack
· complete a transaction in a shop
· talk about location, including use of the points of the compass
· count objects
· talk about times and dates
· formulate questions
· make some suggestions
· write some simple sentences.
Teaching methods
Mostly in Chinese.
Examination
HSK test ("Hanyu Shuiping Kaoshi" in Chinese), a standardized test of Chinese language proficiency for non-native speakers.
The test is not compulsory. Take Level 1 online at:

if you want to know how much Chinese you have learned after completing this course.
If you have planned to continue learning Chinese language, it is also recommended that you take this test in order to find out which class to choose in the next semester.
 
Please ask your teacher to create a valid test ID (username) and password for you. Passing Level 1 means that you are ready to follow the class "102: Mandarin Chinese Beginner’s Level 2" in the next semester.
Course literature
The course is based on a textbook called “Chinese Conversation: 301 Sentences", supplemented by other references.
